Suggestions:
Here are some general suggestions to common problems if you want to go it on
your own.
- Always backup your important files before making system
changes, CDRW's, Tapes and Floppy Disks are cheap, data loss is not fun.
- Update your antivirus program to the most current set up
virus tables (Liveupdate for Norton). Always a very good, prudent idea
to keep your antivirus program updated.
- Norton Antivirus reports a Virus. By all means follow
Norton's suggestions. Normally it will try to quarantine the virus and
if that's not possible then it may suggest deleting it. If Norton can't
remove the virus directly, you may be routed onto their website where
additional instructions and descriptions of the problem are available.
Read the website, but only go this route if you are comfortable with the
instructions.
- Too many Pop-Ups. some ideas:
- go to LavasoftUSA.com and download a free program called
Ad-aware 6.0 or even better, pay for and download
Ad-aware 6.0 Plus ($39.95), install it, run it (following instructions
of course).
- Also from the LavasoftUSA site, there is a "Plug-In" to the Ad-aware
programs on the same website where you get Adaware called
Messenger-Control that helps you turn off a feature of Windows that
allows people to remotely do popups on your computers.
- Also, just in case, run a full Scan of your system with your Antivirus
Program.
- Suggestion: Make you backup any important files often
enough that you won't mind losing the changes since your last backup.
CDRW's are cheap.
- If you do a lot of Web browsing, Internet Gaming or Music
downloading, then it would be prudent to:
- have an antivirus program and keep it up to date at least updated
weekly.
- have something like adaware to remove advertisement software (aka
Scumware) that gets loaded w/o your knowledge.
- have some sort of firewall, most routers have firewalls, or you can get
something like ZoneAlarm
